- In Greco-Roman mythology, Arachne was a young woman who boasted that she is the best weaver, even better than Athena, the goddess of weaving. Athena, refusing to acknowledge her, challenge her to a contest to see who's the better weaver. Athena saw that Arachne is indeed the better weaver. Out of rage and jealousy, she thrashed Arachne's work and beat her, leading Arachne to commit suicide. Athena, feeling merciful, revived her using the juices of aconite. Arachne revived as a spider, making her and her descendants great weavers forever.
